Job Purpose

 The Systems Engineer plays a key role in designing, implementing, and maintaining networking, security, and IT infrastructure solutions. This position requires both hands-on technical expertise and strategic planning to ensure optimal system performance and security. 

Essential Functions 

Networking
Tier 1 (Maintenance & Execution) 
  • ​Monitor and troubleshoot network performance issues. 
  • ​Configure and maintain VLANs, routing policies, and network failover pairs. 
  • ​Perform network device installations, firmware updates, and routine maintenance. 
  • ​Manage and troubleshoot VPN tunnels, SSH tunnels, and firewall rules. 
  • ​Handle physical networking tasks, including racking/unracking, AP placement, and cabling.
Tier 2 (Management & Creation) 
  • ​Design and implement network architecture, including spine+leaf topology. 
  • ​Develop and enforce traffic prioritization policies for VoIP and mission-critical applications. 
  • ​Oversee AWS networking configurations, including VPCs, subnets, NLBs, ALBs, and routing policies. 
  • ​Establish best practices for network security and redundancy strategies. 
  • ​Optimize and enhance network monitoring tools for proactive issue resolution. 
Systems Engineering & Administration
Tier 1 (Maintenance & Execution) 
  • ​Perform routine Linux server maintenance (Debian, Ubuntu, Raspbian). 
  • ​Manage user accounts, group policies, and directory services in Microsoft AD. 
  • ​Handle storage and file sharing via NAS, Samba/SMB/CIFS. 
  • ​Configure and maintain DNS, DHCP, NTP, and mail services (O365, Mimecast, Google Workspace). 
  • ​Assist with basic AWS administration (EC2, RDS, IAM, security groups). 
Tier 2 (Management & Creation) 
  • ​Architect and deploy infrastructure automation and containerization (Docker, GitLab CI/CD). 
  • ​Develop system hardening strategies and implement security compliance policies. 
  • ​Lead the design and configuration of enterprise storage and backup solutions. 
  • ​Oversee cloud security and identity management across AWS and hybrid infrastructures. 
  • ​Optimize mail flows, spam filtering, and advanced routing configurations. 
Information Security (InfoSec)
Tier 1 (Maintenance & Execution) 
  • ​Monitor security event logs and investigate incidents (InsightIDR, Defender, Mimecast). 
  • ​Enforce firewall rules and manage endpoint security configurations. 
  • ​Assist with employee phishing awareness campaigns and security training. 
  • ​Maintain security patches and compliance updates for network devices and servers. 
  • ​Respond to security questionnaires and audits from external partners. 
Tier 2 (Management & Creation) 
  • ​Develop organization-wide security policies and procedures. 
  • ​Lead penetration testing, vulnerability management, and remediation initiatives. 
  • ​Implement advanced IAM policies and least-privilege access models. 
  • ​Optimize security configurations for cloud and hybrid environments. 
  • ​Establish and enforce network segmentation and zero-trust architectures. 
  • ​Additional Responsibilities 
Hybrid IT Support:  
  • ​Tier 1 - Asset lifecycle management  
  • ​Tier 2 - Strategic IT planning. 
Building & Facility Support:  
  • ​Tier 1 - Basic access requests 
  • ​Tier 2 - Infrastructure planning. 
Billing & Vendor Management:  
  • ​Tier 1 - Account renewals;  
  • ​Tier 2 - Vendor negotiations.​ 
Skills / Qualifications 

  • ​​Technical Skills: 
  • ​Deep knowledge of networking (design, implementation, security) and Linux system administration. 
  • ​Cloud experience (AWS, Rackspace) and hybrid networking. 
  • ​Security-first mindset with expertise in InfoSec best practices. 
  • ​Soft Skills: 
  • ​Ability to work under pressure and perform well in high-stakes environments. 
  • ​Comfortable tackling new challenges daily—no two days will be the same! 
  • ​Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to troubleshooting. 
  • ​Excellent communication and documentation skills.​ 
Required Education and Experience 

  • ​​Experience in small-to-medium-sized companies wearing multiple hats. 
  • ​Extensive hands-on experience in networking, system administration, and security. 
  • ​Proven ability to manage hybrid cloud environments, including AWS and on-prem infrastructure. 
  • ​Experience troubleshooting and resolving complex network and security issues in a fast-paced environment. 
  • ​Strong lateral knowledge across various IT disciplines, with a track record of adapting to new challenges and technologies.​ 
Preferred Education and Experience 

  • ​​Bachelor's degree from an accredited university is preferred.​

  • ​​This job operates in a professional office environment.  Flex-schedule opportunities are available for this role.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. ​

  • ​​Ability to work in an office environment, sitting at a desk or workstation for extended periods of time. 
  • ​Use of a computer, keyboard, and other standard office equipment.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work 

  • ​​Standard business hours with frequent after-hours work required. 
  • ​Availability for emergency response, system maintenance, and network troubleshooting outside of standard working hours is essential. 
  • ​Must be adaptable to a dynamic schedule, including nights and weekends as needed.​ 
Travel 

  • ​​​Occasional travel may be necessary to assist with networking in offsite areas.​
